II. Moralistic Therapeutic Deism

 The Definition of MTD

  1. A god exists who created and ordered the world and watches over human life on earth.
  2. God wants people to be good, nice, and fair to each other, as taught in the Bible and by most world religions.
  3. The central goal of life is to be happy and to feel good about oneself.
  4. God does not need to be particularly involved in one's life except when God is needed to resolve a problem.
  5. Good people go to heaven when they die.

III. Expressive Individualism

A Working Definition:

“I become a person of worth as I discover my own deepest desires and feelings and express them. Once I determine who I am, then I can enter into relationships, but only with those who accept me on my own terms” - p. 4 from On Marriage (2020) by Tim & Kathy Keller

The Expressive Individualism Series – by Trevin Wax - CLICK HERE - This a very helpful collection of blog posts by the editor of The Gospel Project curriculum and a favorite author of mine.

How Youth Like Me Learn Expressive individualism – by Jaquelle Crowe Ferris - CLICK HERE  - Great first-person insight for seeing the pervasive nature of this "unseen wind" in our culture.

The Road to Sexual Revolution: Carl Trueman and the Modern Self - CLICK HERE - This is a book review of a recent work by Carl Trueman, professor at Grove City College.  According to Carl Trueman, focusing myopically on problems with sexual morality often results in misguided responses to the sexual revolution. Instead, we must grapple with “a much deeper and wider revolution in the understanding of what it means to be a self.”  CLICK HERE for a YouTube "video podcast" discussion with Carl Trueman about his book.  It is an hour long, but very helpful.

IV. Let's Talk!

If you would like to talk more about these "winds" - or better yet: Join with a small group of others for a 4-week, COVID-careful discussion and futher study - please contact me by email and I will see what can be arranged in the new year.  CLICK HERE to email me at Bill@Harderwyk.com or call the Harderwyk Ministries church office.

He redefines them. But what, in that case, is he asserting about Jesus, in particular when he calls him ‘the image of God’ (v. 15)? There has been considerable debate about this from the first Christian centuries up to the present, and the answer offered below is an attempt to hold together the strong points ...
