From The Commentaries On This Passage In regards to controlling the Holy Spirit NT Wright says in “Acts for Everyone” “Luke is not interested in Simon’s fate, so much as in the general point, that any attempt to bring the spirit under human control is a nonsense and to be rejected outright. The spirit is the spirit of the sovereign God, who blows where he wants and how he wants. Neither Peter, nor John, nor Philip, nor any human being then, since or now can do other than be open to what the spirit wants, ready to be blown along by the rushing mighty wind.” In speaking on evangelism John Stott says in “The Message of Acts” “A

Resources For "Devoted" Series From Each Harderwyk Preacher I. From The Commentaries On This Passage Stephen’s belief about the Law and the Temple from John Stott, “The Message of Acts” “What Jesus taught, then, was that the temple and the law would be superseded, meaning not that they had never been divine gifts in the first place, but that they would find their God-intended fulfilment in him, the Messiah. Jesus was and is himself the replacement of the temple and the fulfilment of the law. Moreover, to affirm that both temple and law pointed forward to him and are now fulfilled in him is to magnify their importance, not to denigrate it. ... Stephen’s speech was not so much a self-defence as a testimony to Christ. His main theme was positive, that Jesus the Messiah had come to replace the temple and fulfil the law, which both bore witness to him. As Calvin put it, ‘No harm can be done to the temple and the law, when Christ is openly established as the end and truth of both.’

II. From The Commentaries On This Passage From John Calvin in Commentary upon the Acts of the Apostles “For if, having weighed all the circumstances, we be desirous to know the sum, Luke condemneth no other fault in Ananias than this, that he meant to deceive God and the Church with a feigned offering. Yet there were more evils packed under this dissimulation: the contempt of God, whom he feareth not, though he knew his wickedness; sacrilegious defrauding, because he

II. From The Commentaries On This Passage From Acts 1-12 For You by Albert Mohler Jr -  “The question (asked in Acts 4:7 - "By what power or what name did you do this?") also reveals a great deal about these Jewish leaders: Ignorance. This counsel was made up of people who were supposed to know everything about Scripture—yet they failed to recognize Jesus as the Messiah. Arrogance. The Scriptures warn against taking a hand against one of God’s prophets (Psalm 105:15). This group crucified the only begotten Son of God, and they have also arrested the apostles, who function as proph
