II. From The Commentaries On This Passage

From Acts 1-12 For You by Albert Mohler Jr “The question (asked in Acts 4:7 - "By what power or what name did you do this?") also reveals a great deal about these Jewish leaders:

  • Ignorance. This counsel was made up of people who were supposed to know everything about Scripture—yet they failed to recognize Jesus as the Messiah.
  • Arrogance. The Scriptures warn against taking a hand against one of God’s prophets (Psalm 105:15). This group crucified the only begotten Son of God, and they have also arrested the apostles, who function as prophets of the gospel. This should have been evident from the fact that these men not only reasoned from the Scriptures, but by the fact that they had just healed a lame man at the temple gates.
  • Fear: The content of the apostles’ preaching undermined and threatened the authority of these Jewish leaders. That’s why the Jewish leaders wanted to know the “name” of the one who had commissioned them to preach.”

From Acts - Reformed Expository Commentary by Derek Thomas - When civil or religious authorities forbid what God requires or require what God forbids, some form of civil disobedience, with acceptance of penal consequences, becomes inescapable. No Christian engages in such a response lightly, but no authority may overrule our requirement to obey God. - p. 103
