Growing My Faith in the Face of Death by Tim KellerRecently diagnosed with pancreatic cancer Tim Keller writes in The Atlantic Monthly: I spent a lifetime counseling others before my diagnosis.  Will I be able to take my own advice?  This a deep and thoughtful reflection by someone whom God has used to shape my own life and ministry.  Read it thoughtfully, then tomorrow read it again.  It is as well, a helpful model of how to speak and live out faith in a setting - this magazine - that is typically unwelcoming.  CLICK HERE for the entire article.  If it asks you to pay or subscribe in order to read it, contact Pastor Bill by email: Bill@Harderwyk.com

II. From The Commentaries

From John For Everyone - NT Wright

"The definition of the true shepherd is that he isn’t in it for his own profit. In fact, the supreme test of what he’s in it for will come when he’s faced with a choice. A predator appears—a lion, a wolf or a bear. You can tell the difference between the true shepherd and the false one by what they do. The false shepherd saves his prospects at the cost of his reputation. The true shepherd shows who he is by being prepared to die for the sheep."

"But, as Israel’s prophets and wise writers had always hinted, the God of Israel was never interested only in Israel. His call to Israel was for the sake of the whole world. The ‘other sheep’ are that great company, from every nation under heaven, that God intends to save, and to save through Jesus. The Jewish Messiah is to become the Lord, the shepherd, of the whole world...

The Gentiles are no longer the enemy. They are sheep who have not yet been brought into the sheepfold. Take a moment to think through how this announcement must have sounded in a world—Jesus’ own world—filled with hatred and suspicion, with violence and counter-violence."

Resources For "Enough" From Each Harderwyk Preacher I. New For This Week BibleProject Overview of Colossians - CLICK HERE for their helpful online video. An Early Copy of the Book of Colossians - CLICK HERE to learn some about "P46" - a papyrus copy of Paul's epistles from about one century after Paul would have first written it.  Note: No dating can be exact, and there is often debate about just when a book of the Bible was written, and then again over the age of any given manuscript that we possess, so none of this can be exact.   CLICK HERE for some actual photographs of P46 and the page where Colossians actually begins!  Also of note: Half of P46 is housed at the University of Michigan library.  Unfortunately for this sermon series, Colossians is in the half housed at the Chester Beatty Library in Dublin, Ireland.  Celebration Sermon Outline - CLICK HERE for this Sunday's Sermon Outline.
