Sermon Resources at Harderwyk - November 21, 2021

 I. New For This Week

Who Do You Trust? - CLICK HERE to view, download or print a pdf giveaway from LARK that Pastor Aaron contributed to, and my friend Jameson wrote.  It connects to what it looks like to live into Christ’s rest with others in Watershed, and whether we are trusting Jesus or religion.

Tim Keller on Matthew 11:25-30 - CLICK HERE to view a great post by Tim Keller on Matthew 11:25-30.  These 3 questions on rest to help frame this week’s message in Watershed (why we need it, what is it, and how to get it)

Daryl Davis is a blues-piano-playing believer mentioned this morning, a black man who has befriended members of the Ku Klux Klan.  Through their friendship many of those friends have changed their views. Daryl is a marvelous example of what loving your neighbor could look like in our moment of history.  CLICK HERE for a 2-minute YouTube of Daryl himself telling the story of one encounter.  CLICK HERE for the 2017 story on NPR of how Daryl first began these friendships.  CLICK HERE for a Christianity Today magazine interview related to the documentary Accidental Courtesy featuring Daryl.

"God-Given Abilities Self-Assessment" - This is a new addition to our Spiritual Formation Resources page that was also referred to in Celebration this morning.  CLICK HERE  and you will find instructions for viewing, and then download and print a copies of material intended to help you identify potential Grace-Gifts for serving in the Body of Christ

Love Your Neighbor - This Sunday in Fusion we will be looking at Christ's command to love our neighbor.  Jesus takes this command to its most provocative edge when he calls us to love our neighbors.  We will explore this during the service, however I also wanted to provide some examples of those living it out.

  • Francis Chan's book Crazy Love quotes Frecerick Buechner - The love for equals is a human thing - of friend for friend, brother for brother.  It is to love what is loving and lovely.  The world smiles. The love for the less fortunate is a beautiful thing - the love for those who suffer, for those who are poor, the sick, the failures, the unlovely.  This is compassion, and it touches the heart of the world.  The love for the more fortunate is a rare thing - to love those who succeed where we fail, to rejoice without envy with those who rejoice, the love of the poor for the rich, of the black man for the white man.  The world is always bewildered by its saints.  And then there is the love for the enemy - love for the one who does not love you but mocks, threatens, and inflicts pain.  The tortured's love for the torturer.  This is God's love. It conquers the world.  (Frederick Buechner. "The Magnificent Defeat.")

An Early Copy of the Book of Colossians - CLICK HERE to learn some about "P46" - a papyrus copy of Paul's epistles from about one century after Paul would have first written it.  Note: No dating can be exact, and there is often debate about just when a book of the Bible was written, and then again over the age of any given manuscript that we possess, so none of this can be exact.   CLICK HERE for some actual photographs of P46 and the page where Colossians actually begins!  Also of note: Half of P46 is housed at the University of Michigan library.  Unfortunately for this sermon series, Colossians is in the half housed at the Chester Beatty Library in Dublin, Ireland.  Celebration Sermon Outline - CLICK HERE for this Sunday's Sermon Outline. He redefines them. But what, in that case, is he asserting about Jesus, in particular when he calls him ‘the image of God’ (v. 15)? There has been considerable debate about this from the first Christian centuries up to the present, and the answer offered below is an attempt to hold together the strong points ...
