II. From The Commentaries On This Passage
From Tim Chester on Exodus 14 in Exodus For You
"The conflict between God and Pharaoh has continued. God has pulled apart his creation around Pharaoh. Through the plagues, Egypt has returned to a primordial chaos, darkness and death. And yet still Pharaoh has not learned the lesson.
So we come to chapter 14. Once again, Pharaoh is trying to exert his authority over God’s people. Once again, we have a showdown between God and Pharaoh. Once again, God determines to gain glory by demonstrating that he alone is Lord: “I will harden Pharaoh’s heart, and he will pursue them. But I will gain glory for myself through Pharaoh and all his army, and the Egyptians will know that I am the Lord … The Egyptians will know that I am the Lord when I gain glory through Pharaoh, his chariots and his horsemen” (14:4, 18).
Israel appear to be caught in a trap—and it is a trap of the Lord’s making (v 1–3). The route they take is a terrible military strategy, and as soon as they hear of it, Pharaoh and his officials regret their decision to let God’s people go (v 5)—just as God had known they would (v 3). So now, Israel are caught between the advancing Egyptian army and the Red Sea (v 6–7, 9). As so often happens in the Bible, things get worse before they get better. But God was in control even over his enemy’s actions (v 8)—and things would get much, much better, in an unforgettable way. By parting the sea, says Nehemiah 9:10, God “made a name for [himself], which remains to this day”. What happened at the Red Sea would bring the God of Israel “everlasting renown” (Isaiah 63:12)."
